Wall-mounted television positioned at a comfortable viewing height in a living room

How High Should You Mount a TV on the Wall?

Getting the height right is one of the most important parts of TV wall mounting. A television can look impressive on the wall, but if the screen sits too high or too low it can become uncomfortable to watch and make the whole room feel awkward.

There is no single mounting height that works in every home. The right position depends on your seating, screen size, viewing distance, room layout and how you actually use the television. TV and Aerial Installer Newcastle provides TV wall mounting and hidden cable installation across Newcastle and Northumberland, and these are the practical points worth considering before any holes are drilled.

Start with your normal viewing position

The best starting point is the position of your eyes when you are sitting where you normally watch television. For a typical lounge, the centre of the screen should usually sit reasonably close to seated eye level rather than being placed high on the wall simply because there is empty space available.

You do not need to chase an exact universal measurement. Sofas vary in height, people sit differently and larger televisions extend much further above and below their centre point. Comfort matters more than following a number copied from another room.

Why TVs often end up mounted too high

A common mistake is treating the television like a picture or mirror and centring it on the available wall. That can leave the screen noticeably above the natural viewing line.

Another cause is choosing the position before considering furniture. Sideboards, soundbars, radiators and sockets can push the TV upwards. Planning the full installation first makes it easier to find a sensible compromise without creating an uncomfortable viewing angle.

Does TV size change the mounting height?

Screen size changes how much wall space the television occupies, but it does not mean a larger TV automatically needs to be mounted higher. In fact, because a large screen extends further from its centre, placing its centre too high can make the top of the picture feel particularly elevated.

If you are replacing a smaller television with a larger model, do not assume the old bracket position will still be right. The VESA mounting points on the rear of the new TV may also sit in a different position, changing where the screen ends up even if the wall plate stays in the same place.

Think about viewing distance as well as height

Mounting height and viewing distance work together. A large screen viewed from relatively close range can make an excessive upward viewing angle more noticeable. From further away, the angle may feel less pronounced.

Before mounting, sit in your usual position and consider where the centre of the proposed screen will be. Marking the approximate screen outline on the wall with low-tack tape can be a useful way to judge the position before committing to it.

What about mounting a TV above a fireplace?

Above-fireplace installations often force a television higher than would otherwise be ideal. Heat is another consideration, and the suitability of the position depends on the type of fireplace, its construction and the TV manufacturer’s installation requirements.

If the only practical location is above a fireplace, a tilting bracket may help improve the viewing angle. The installation still needs to account for the wall construction, safe fixing points, cable routing and any heat generated around the television.

TV mounting height in a bedroom

A bedroom is different from a lounge because you may watch from a more reclined position. A slightly higher screen can therefore make sense, particularly when viewing from bed rather than from a chair.

The correct position depends on the bed height, pillows, viewing angle and whether the TV needs to clear furniture. This is a good example of why a fixed measurement from the floor is less useful than planning around the person actually watching the screen.

Choose the bracket before finalising the position

The bracket affects both the final position and how the television can be adjusted. Fixed brackets keep the screen close to the wall, tilting brackets allow some vertical adjustment, and full-motion brackets can bring the TV away from the wall and change its viewing direction.

The bracket must also be suitable for the television’s size, weight and VESA mounting pattern. If you want help choosing between mounting options, see our TV installation and wall mounting services.

Plan sockets and hidden cables at the same time

A neat TV installation is about more than the bracket. Power, HDMI leads, aerial feeds, network cables, soundbars and games consoles all need to be considered before the screen goes onto the wall.

Planning these connections at the same time as the mounting height can avoid visible cables dropping from the television or connectors ending up inaccessible behind the screen. If you are moving into a new property, it is especially useful to decide where the television and connected equipment will live before decorating.

Wall construction matters

The desired height is only part of the job. The wall itself must be assessed so suitable fixings and mounting methods can be used. Brick, block, stud walls and other constructions require different approaches, and the position of services behind the wall also needs consideration.

Do not choose a mounting point solely because it looks right from the sofa. The finished installation needs to be secure as well as comfortable to watch.

From our experience at TV and Aerial Installer Newcastle

With 23 years of audiovisual experience, owner Mick Stocker knows that a good TV installation starts with the room rather than a generic height chart. Seating position, screen dimensions, bracket type, wall construction and cable routes all need to work together.

Taking a little time to plan the position before drilling can make a major difference to how natural the television feels in everyday use. It also gives you the opportunity to plan hidden cabling and connected equipment as part of one tidy installation.
